AWKed Design and Jewelry Studio was founded by designer and artist Dmitriy Polyakov in the summer of 2010. It began as a channel for capturing the spontaneous creative energy of children’s art. In his Art With Kids Studio, Dmitriy collaborated with children to create art works that expressed their free imagination and unique vision. Dmitriy then developed new techniques to preserve the children’s original art, by translating their drawings into designs for handcrafted cloisonné enamel jewelry. The AWKed Design collection builds on this legacy, offering existing designs based on children’s drawings or the opportunity to create a truly unique piece.

Dmitriy Polyakov started drawing as a young child and has been fascinated by art ever since – especially its power to express spirituality and universal human values. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Dmitriy was surrounded by art from birth. His father was a graphic artist and his mother a fashion designer; however, it was his grandmother, a renowned art teacher in Georgia, who first taught Dmitriy painting, drawing, origami and the excitement of artistic creation.

Trained at the State Academy of Fine Arts, Georgia (Russia) in Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Dmitriy emigrated to the United States at the age of 18 and continued his studies at Parsons School of Design in New York. Now an artist with 20+ years of professional experience in decorative arts, design, advertising, stage design, cinema art, mosaic, painting, and photography, Dmitriy has decided to focus his artistic energies on jewelry design.

Dmitriy draws inspiration from a wide range of art disciplines such as graphic arts, monumental arts, sculpture, mosaic, stained glass and painting. Modern artists Chagall, Kandinsky, Klee and Miró also influence his artistic vision.

While much contemporary fine jewelry design is meant to draw attention to the monetary value of the piece, the carat weight of the gems or value of the precious metals, Dmitriy Polyakov’s designs look instead to communicate a spiritual aura: the wonder of the cosmos, the joy of childhood discovery, the adventure of love, or the depth of religious experience.
